SATURDAY MARCH 1ST, 9:30PM
Mão Morta
The 50th anniversary of April 25 will be celebrated in 2024. Mão Morta are also celebrating the 40th anniversary of their foundation in November 1984. Two events that apparently have nothing in common, except for the fact that without April 25, and the freedom and democracy it brought to Portugal and the Portuguese by ending 48 years of dictatorship, Mão Morta would probably never have existed. Now, at a time when the danger of the return of fascism is palpable, not only in Portugal but throughout the democratic world, with the ideological initiative of conservative political forces and their privileged reception in the media directing the dominant political discourse, Mão Morta couldn't help but speak out and denounce the air of the times. “Viva la Muerte!” is about this upsurge in anti-democratic forces and their thuggish behavior, which uses democracy to applaud fascism, making clear the dangers we run and the dangers democracy faces. It comprises an artistic approach, through a stage show, where the melodic and harmonic references of Portuguese intervention music pre-25 April intersect with the rock and experimentalism of Mão Morta's sound, and a reflective, more rigorous and enlightening approach, through a moment of sharing knowledge, with the concept of fascism being addressed by political scientists, philosophers and historians in the context of a seminar or conference related to the show.
