The Swan Lake (2023), by Chelsea McMullan
With an intimate approach, this is a film that invites viewers to consider the impacts of ballet culture on artists by focusing on its protagonists and the various ways in which, confronted with a tradition that has historically valued conformity and perfection, they challenge ideals of race, class, and stereotypes about bodies. The National Ballet of Canada is led by Karen Kain, an icon of the dance world who is about to retire from the stage. Chelsea McMullan's film follows Kain and a group of young dancers as they immerse themselves in the intense process of creating Swan Lake, closely experiencing the most intimate events of their personal lives as they approach one of the most significant opening nights in the company’s history. Karen Kain and her company granted unrestricted access to the director and her team, who followed them for almost two years. During this time, they witnessed not only creative conflicts but also devastating injuries, personal setbacks, and, above all, the significant motivation in the struggle for equity and change that emerged from within the company itself.
