Arooj Aftab
The first Pakistani singer and songwriter to win a Grammy, Arooj Aftab returns to Portugal for a unique concert at the Centro Cultural Vila Flor. Born to Pakistani parents resident in Saudi Arabia, Arooj Aftab returned to her hometown of Lahore, Pakistan, when she was 10 years old. There she taught herself how to play the guitar, while starting to sing, as she listened to Billie Holiday, Hariprasad Chaurasia, Mariah Carey and Begum Akhtar. Her sound fluctuates between classic and new age minimalism, Sufi devotional poetry and electronic trance, jazz structures and states of pure being. The growing success of her work has been particularly noticeable since the release of her most recent album “Vulture Prince” which, in addition to being on the main lists of the best albums of 2021, and presented at Tiny Desk and KEXP, also earned her a Grammy.
